BOVINE VETERINARIAN

Dr. Steve Lucas (Laramie Peak Veterinary Associates) informs HFSM that he was called to von Forell Ranch to evaluate a herd of cattle that may have been exposed to oily contaminants associated with yesterday’s spill on Chugwater Creek.  He reports that three cattle show mild signs consistent with possible ingestion exposure (reduced appetite, slight drooling, and darkened nasal discharge).  Dr. Lucas indicates clinical evaluation cannot proceed without further chemical characterization of the crude oil, specifically TPH breakdown (aliphatic/aromatic ranges), PAH concentrations, and volatile fraction profile.  He notes that treatment recommendations and exposure risk assessment depend on knowing specific toxicological drivers (e.g., light-end hydrocarbons vs. heavier fractions).  This is a Drill!
