These hazards present a significant entrapment hazard for response crews and shoreline assessment teams. Officer Ellsworth advises that the Site Safety Plan (ICS‑208) be updated to include guidance on: (1) recognition of quicksand indicators, e.g., saturated fine sediments, unusual surface rippling, sudden loss of footing, (2) safe approach protocols for working near unstable banks, and (3) immediate actions and rescue procedures to be followed if a responder becomes trapped or partially entrapped in quicksand.
